Julia Jacklin announces new album The Gem and plays Spindizzy Dublin this month

Julia Jacklin has announced her fourth studio album The Gem, out September 25th and as previously shared it is released on 4AD.

The first single ‘Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)’ is out today. She plays Spindizzy Records in Dublin on Sunday June 28th for a solo performance and signing – her first Irish appearance before a full National Stadium headline show on Sunday February 15th 2027.

The Spindizzy show is part of a UK and Ireland instore run offering the first chance to hear songs from the album performed live. Entry with a purchase of the album.

‘Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)’ is a jangly, bright piece of eighties-influenced guitar pop – a nod to the Melbourne sound Jacklin fell in love with when she moved there from Sydney in 2017. The video, directed by Jacklin herself, reimagines the album’s striking cover art.

The album’s origin story is a good one. The Gem was recorded above an actual pub called The Gem in Collingwood, Melbourne – at Rat Shack Studios, owned by co-producer Robert Muinos and located directly above the bar where Jacklin had spent years watching bands play on the floor with the tables pushed to the sides.

She brought in friends Jacob Diamond on guitar, Mimi Gilbert on bass and Jess Elwood on drums, recorded in converted hotel room accommodation upstairs, and had to stop before midnight every night to avoid disturbing the neighbours and the bands playing below. They thought it would take two weeks. It took nearly a year.

“The Gem felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging. I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to find something.” On the last day of recording, the band got matching tattoos – a small circle representing an opal – done by one of the bartenders downstairs.

The Gem follows Don’t Let The Kids Win (2016), Crushing (2019) and PRE PLEASURE (2022) and marks her debut on 4AD.
