Just Mustard release ‘Frank’, the Dundalk band’s first single since their debut album Wednesday

Avatar

Dundalk shoegazing five-piece rock band Just Mustard have been on a roll since the release of their debut album Wednesday last year. The band whose album was nominated for the Choice Music Prize Irish album of the year leans on shrieking guitars, reverb-soaked vocals and lulling vocals, are one of the bands who have been named in the same breadth as Fontaines D.C. (they are on tour with them in the UK) and The Murder Capital in those spate of articles about Irish guitar acts by UK publications recently.

‘Frank’ is a song that the band have recognisably played live in recent months and is up there with the best of their tunes so far with vocalist Katie Ball’s vocal performance ebbing and flowing against the band’s undulating atmospherics. It’s a split release with another tune called ‘October’, recorded in Start Together Studios, Belfast by Chris Ryan. Both songs are on a 12″ vinyl that can be ordered on Bandcamp.

The video is a stop-motion photography , written and directed by Just Mustard, and shot and edited by Tim Shearwood.

Katie Ball said: “We thought it would be interesting to use stop motion animation to emphasise the broken rhythms of the song. Every character and prop in the video and their interactions represents a different musical or thematic element of the song to us. We wrote and directed it together as a band and collaborated with filmmaker Tim Shearwood who shot and edited it.”
