Lankum share new song ‘The New York Trader’; extra Cork & Dublin gigs
Lankum have released a new song from their forthcoming album False Lankum, out on March 24th on Rough Trade Records.
After the epic ‘Go Dig My Grave’, and the announcement of a slew of tour dates including new Irish gigs this May in Belfast, Cork and Dublin, Lankum’s second single is ‘The New York Trader’, a song the band said was learned from Ringsend musician Luke Cheevers.
Here’s the etymology of the song according to the band.
“It is one of a group of songs (sometimes referred to as the ‘Jonah Ballads’). The words to the song may be based on an older ballad called ‘The Pirate’ in which the destination was New Barbary rather than ‘Amerikay’.”
“It was printed on broadsides in the UK where it was quite popular in the 19th century, and versions were subsequently collected in Wiltshire, Norfolk and Nova Scotia in the 20th century.”
Watch the video was directed by Michael Speed and Jono Canning at Beggars. It features visuals are based on the work of Gustav Dore, whose illustrations feature on the cover art for False Lankum.

False Lankum
False Lankum was produced by John ‘Spud’ Murphy, and features two original tracks along with 10 trad songs, ‘Netta Perseus’ and ‘The Turn’, both penned by the group’s Daragh Lynch, and the press release says while it draws on traditional folk, the record breaks out of the genre, and is likened to sitting comfortably alongside Rough Trade labelmates black midi and Gilla Band.
The album’s 12 tracks, composed of 10 traditional songs and two originals, show the four-piece using a new palate to colour their sound in an increasingly experimental way, alongside longtime
“We wanted to create more contrast on the record so the light parts would be almost spiritual and the dark parts would be incredibly dark, even horror inducing.
