Am i missing something here? The record labels are covered by insurance, which means they can reproduce the stock and sell it and therefore make the profit they want. Why would a fire, which only means they have to make an insurance claim, warrant a post to “help” them?
Nobody buys fucking records anymore, independent record companies are finding it increasingly difficult to keep running in these tough times. thousands of records have been destroyed, hard work ruined..I suppose there’s always one know-all who has to have their say.Twat.
Sounds like “sympathy from the devil”
Insurance only covers cost price of stock. A lot of these labels are now left hanging without physical stock to sell. Hard for any business. Beggars Group alone lost 750,000 CDs to the fire. Memphis Industries say 90% of their total stock was lost.
Look, these labels have provided me and plenty like me with a lot of beautiful music to listen to so this is mostly an altruistic gesture to encourage people to support them if they feel the same way or are so inclined. If you don’t agree then don’t buy the music. Simple.
Are they definitely covered by insurance though? I can’t think of a single insurance policy that covers Civil Unrest.
A warehouse that big should have some kind of insurance policy to cover something of this nature.
Any way to confirm for sure?
Beggars Group claimed that their insurance covered replacement costs as well, so hopefully the labels that are part of it (4AD, Matador, Rough Trade, etc.) won’t be too hardly hit by this. At best, this will just mean a delay and some short-term stock shortages for them.
Good piece. Surprised you haven’t included Loose Records, who lost their stock. We have featured many of their artists at Kilkenny Rhythm and Roots- John Grant, Duke and The King, Laura Veirs etc
Hey John, I’ve added them in. I didn’t have time today to do 165 labels. Give me credit for what I did do aye? 🙂
John Grant and Laura Veirs aren’t on that label by the way, they’re Bella Union. Duke And the King are no longer on it by the looks of things.
Great idea Niall, was looking for a list like this as there have been a few albums I have been meaning to buy and this way I get to help the label, and help myself, win win!
Thanks for the work you put in. Picked up three albums I’ve been meaning to for a while now.
Nice one.
Thanks so much for all your hard work on this article and list. Don’t suppose you could include XtraMile Recordings? Home to the great Frank Turner, amongst others. This is from their twitter feed: “10th June Frank Turner’s new album No: 10 in Offical Chart. 10th August ALL Xtra Mile stock past & present in ashes. Totally f***ing gutted.”
Added Xtramile there.
insurance doesnt cover riots
insurance doesnt cover riots
Fair dues Niall….. As much as all love a freebie this time its its time to pay especially for the smaller labels…. without them there is no ”Indie”….
