lullahush to release Irish trad-influenced An Todhchaí EP on Future Classic
The Irish producer is back with a three-track EP inspired by a hypothetical.
lullahush’s forthcoming EP, titled An Todhchaí is a sonic “what if?” posing the question of what Irish trad and electronic music could sound like together.
The three tracks explore that push and pull with ‘An Caoineadh’ (The Crying), ‘An Grá’ (The Love) and ‘An Todhchaí’ (The Future), and you can hear the middle song today.
“I believe a holistic marriage of Traditional Irish Music and Contemporary Electronica can express a unique perspective on modern Irish identity. I want to create in an Irish context what has been created by the likes of Meitei (Japan), Lauten Der Scheele (Germany), Lucrezia Dalt (Columbia), Proc Fiskal (Scotland) and Debit (Mexico) — a passionate conversation between tradition and innovation that illuminates the past while looking to the future: respectful without being dogmatic; playful yet serious.”
‘An Caoineadh’ is a party, the production unapologetically bombastic, the instrumentation uncannily traditional, samples taken from friends drunkenly imitating RTÉ newscasters at a festival on Inis Oírr.
‘An Grá’ is a tongue-in-cheek send up of our love affair with alcohol, chopped up Irish-isms (digital Paddywhackery) laid down over an intense, intricate Bass workout.
‘An Todhchaí’ is both celebration and provocation – making a comparison between Chicago Footwork and Claire Set Dancing – recontextualising samples of musicologist (and master accordion player) Tony McMahon bemoaning “the future of Irish Traditional Music”.
