Maruja are a UK-based band who combine punk, noise and cosmic jazz.

The four-piece play Whelan’s Upstairs on 9th November 2024 with two shows on the same day at 6pm and 9pm.

Tickets are €18 plus fees available from singularartists.ie.

The band’s debut EP Knocknarea was listed as one of Anthony Fantano top EPs of 2023, and yes Knocknarea is a reference to the place in Sligo, and the artwork features an old photo featuring telegraph pole workers in the area of the past.

“The story, they tell me, stems from saxophonist Joe – who couldn’t be there for the chat. Joe’s great-grandad took photos between 1920 and 1960 during the period when electrical infrastructure was first being brought to County Sligo.,”
