Meet Boygenius, the new project from Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus
Boygenius is the new project and collective moniker of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus.
The trio began writing material together last year after bonding during green-room hangouts while on tour, and the fruits of this are to see physical form in an eponymous ‘EP’ released through Matador Records this November 9th. The illustrious trio are acclaimed artists in their own right and news of their collaboration is welcomed by many.
Accompanying the announcement was the of a triumvirate of songs from EP Stay Down, Me & My Dog and Bite The Hand, and they give a good indication of what’s to come. The songs merge core characteristics of each artists’ own music, sewn together by common traits of electric guitars and compelling lyrics. Baker’s signature slow builds and taut vocals add a sense of urgency to Stay Down, while Bite the Hand roils with the slow-burning layers of guitar that both Bridgers and Dacus are known for.
Baker said that:
“Everyone seemed both confident enough to present ideas and fight for their individual vision, but considerate and humble enough to make decisions which ultimately served the song… It was a process that required a balance of determination and forthrightness with graciousness and pliability, and I think that we all did a good job of enacting that.”
Baker and Bridgers embark on co-headline tour later this year with Dacus supporting.
