New music: Holychild, Squarehead & Movement
Every Friday, I’ll publish my new tracks and artist picks of the week as featured in the Irish Independent’s Day & Night Magazine. Follow Day & Night on Twitter and Facebook for more and pick up the paper to see my entire column this week including a Netflix film of the week and why Lorde has made such an impact.
Movement – ‘Us’
You might recognise that bassline from ‘Jasmine’, the alternative hit from the estranged UK musician Jai Paul. Sure, Modular Records-signed Sydney three-piece Movement move in the same shadowy dance/R&B circles so loving ‘Us’ is kind of like falling for the cool sexy cousin from Australia.
Holychild – ‘Happy With Me’
Icona Pop helped make shouty energetic pop music cool again. LA pop duo Louie Diller and Liz Nistico aka Holychild are repeating the trick on their breakthrough single ‘Happy With Me’, a song that has the sunniest beat you’ll hear all year.
Squarehead – ‘Two Miles’
Dublin rock band Squarehead quietly released their second album Respect a few weeks ago, showcasing a more aggressive grungier sound than their debut’s jangly guitar pop. The band’s melodic sensibilities remain intact however as demonstrated on Two Miles, a searing slice of screaming classic college rock.
