The Belfast-born, South London-based songwriter built the record around samples pulled from his late grandfathers’ tape collections out this month on Double Dare..

piglet, the solo project of Irish songwriter and producer Charlie Loane, has announced a new mixtape, so far, out October 23rd via Double Dare, alongside new single ‘the trip’.

so far came together during a stretch of real upheaval, moving cities, houses and jobs, pulling together song ideas both old and newly written, some finished in a single day. What holds the record together isn’t a single songwriting approach but a shared source material: samples drawn from the tape collections of both of Loane’s grandfathers.

“i put this release together in a period of lots of change, moving cities, houses and jobs,” Loane says. “some of the song ideas were quite old and some were made impulsively in a day or so. the thing that holds the songs together is the use of samples from both of my grandads’ tape collections. when they each died no one else in my family was particularly interested in their tapes, so i was able to take as many of them as i could fit in my bag.”

Raised in Belfast and now based in South London, Loane has built piglet into a strangely affecting project since 2020 debut EP alex’s birthday, also released on Double Dare, writing with a deeply personal focus on mental health, queer and trans experience, and self-identity. He’s released two collaborative tracks with Porridge Radio via Secretly Canadian, and 2022 EP seven songs on Blue Flowers (home to Puma Blue, Nilüfer Yanya and Westerman) drew comparisons to Xiu Xiu for the way it holds the delicate and the disarming together. The 2024 EP frank forever was the most recent piglet release.
