RÓIS is a Fermanagh composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and electronic artist, who released the brilliant EP Mo Léan that placed highly on my Irish albums of the year.
Over to RÓIS…
As I write this from Belfast, I feel very proud as I search for my favourite tracks this year, most of which happen to come from Ireland.
Ana Palindrome – SORRY A MILLION
This song feels timeless. It’s a 70s forgotten banger yet still ahead of its time.
Niamh’s chorus-filled voice, the beautiful soaring scratchy viola and the very simple arrangement ties so perfectly together. Their live sets seem to have that timeless energy to it as well. A slow moving cloud that you’re so engaged in
Daniela lalita – Tenía Razón
Such a unique production and sound design. Apparently the opening drum beat was used by tapping flip flops on a tiled floor.
Tailtiu – HURTS
This whole album is banger-full. The perfect mix of a club classic but laced with pure and utter filth.
MMMouth – I give it all to you
Despite being two beautiful legends, mmmouth is masterful creation of gorgeous freaky gnarly dorty mouthwashed weirdo-excellence.
Milkweed – Folklore – My Father’s Sheep is Dead
A constantly changing mesh of analogue samples and verse. I’ve listened to this way too many times.
Bethany Ley – Glass Bonding
The feeling and awe in this track, mixed with gritty and crystallised bleeps and bloops creates a whirlwind experience. You can tell the track, and album has great depth and research into the mystic, the body, the primordial cycles. With careful craft and sublime sound design every moment is new and refreshing.
E The Artist, Harmful Logic – Ogun
Glonky.
RF Chaney – Tropism
Zoned out to this whole album a few times. so well put together.
Muckno – Folk Wanker
I think this song perfectly encapsulates the complexity in a simple song. Lyrics are perfect. Structure is perfect.
So many wankers about. Just need to listen to this song to put them in their place. It’s a beautiful album too.
Neil Ó Lochlainn & Cuar – Dance with me
Never thought I could hear trad in this way. Love what Neil and Cuar are doing with the tradition. Beautiful overlapping melodies and jazz idioms. So inventive.
