The Berlin-based house and disco label Toy Tonics is making its Dublin debut on Friday night with a club outing at The Racket Space.
Cody Currie, Kapote and OneCanChan are playing on the night, and we asked the creative mind behind the label, and DJ, music collector, producer, keyboardist Kapote to pick 10 tracks he’s likely to reach for on his busy DJ travels.
With over 160 parties around the globe this year, Toy Tonics is probably one of the busiest dance collectives in the world right now. Regulars at clubs like Berghain, Rex, and Phonox, Kapote and the TT crew are known for connecting rare old funk and disco with the new wave of soulful house. Indie dance meets all kinds of warm, groovy 4/4 energy.
Martha Pinel – Über Moto” (Lipelis Remix)
A fresh release on our own Toy Tonics label by Brazilian digger, collector and fun-machine DJ Martha Pinel. The Lipelis remix stands out — bringing together Martha’s baile funk and ’80s influences with effective ’90s electro energy that people go crazy for on the floor.
Check out her Instagram: one of the DJs with the best taste and the most fun wardrobe. She’s not only a music collector.. she’s clothing, clothing, clothing.
Baziman – Darco 09
I live in Berlin-Neukölln, surrounded by 300,000 Turkish and Arab people. Every time I buy a newspaper or grab a döner, I hear music from the East — maybe that’s where my love for Arabic melodies and scales comes from.
This track mixes Arabic singing with pushy ’90s electro beats. Maybe it’s a bit tacky… but I love to play it in the right moments.
Kapote – Misery (Harvey Sutherland Remix)
A bit of self-promo… but this remix is gold. Originally from my album Para Mȳtho Disco, we asked a few artists I love to reinterpret the track. Besides Cassius, Opolopo, and Dukwa, Harvey also made a version — great to listen to and great to play.
Cassius – Dance On
I’ve been friends with Boombass from Cassius for many years since my time living in France. The early French DJs and producers from the ’90s were a massive inspiration for Toy Tonics: Eric Rug, Yellow Productions, Étienne de Crécy, and of course Cassius.
So of course I play his new tune too.
Josh Ludlow – Push It Up
Josh and his Make A Dance crew are busy these days. He makes great-sounding, super-effective productions. Sometimes a bit too English and tech-house for me, but often it’s just super funky and perfect to play. He also released an EP on Toy Tonics that I love.
This one is ironic, fun, and effective.. a great track.
Barbara Boeing – Pedra
I have to support my crew even if they release on other labels. But honestly, I’d play this even if I didn’t know the artist.
Great work by my friend Barbara, incredible DJ from Brazil, living in Milan, and regularly playing with Toy Tonics.
Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange – Languages of Pao
A super sweet, dancey broken-beat track from this amazing band from Melbourne around Ziggy Zeitgeist and his crew. They live between London and Berlin now, and I share a studio room with them in Berlin.
The album this track comes from is pure beauty: neo-jazz, dance, live energy, emotional music fusion. Listen to the whole thing and have a spliff… you will fly.
Mighty Dub Katz – Ghetto Girl
A special one. Some people might hate it, I love it. It destroys any dancefloor. I started playing it again after hearing Sam Ruffillo drop it and making every girl in the club freak out.
James White & The Blacks – Contort Yourself
An ’80s New York punk-funk track I’ve been playing since I started DJ’ing. The whole fun vibe fits perfectly again, just like in the early 2000s. Hard bassline, screamy vocals, groove-band vibes.
Bring back 2005 please.
Sexual Harassment – I Need a Freak
Another ’80s classic that was huge in the 2000s. A lot of people sampled this track, but the original is still the best.
Great to play again right now.
