Tricky returns with his new album Mixed Race on August 30th on Domino Records. He has described it as a “gangster album” but clarifies not “gangsta rap”…
“That’s not me. I can’t talk about being a bad boy, ‘cos I’m not. But I’ve been around that. So this is the closest I can get to a gangsta album. Its very gully, as Jamaicans call it… very dark. Tense, street and urban. It’s like a movie, almost. “
For the first video from the album for the ‘Peter Gunn Theme’-aping ‘Murder Weapon’ (also a reworking of a classic dancehall hit from Echo Minott), Tricky has gone to the cinematic side of his soul for the clip with Tricky playing a boxer. Irish/ Italian singer Frankey Riley sings on the track.
Mixed Race features guests Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Parisian horn players he met on the street, Jamaican singer Terry Lynn, London’s Blackman and his youngest brother Marlon Thaws In an interesting tidbit, Tricky says he has agreed to work with Massive Attack again.
