The film is released in Ireland on August 8th.
Ever since the Kneecap film debuted at Sundance, the Belfast Irish language rap trio have made 2024 their year, from a Jimmy Fallon appearance, to making a stand against militarism at the SXSW Festival, and releasing their debut album Fine Art on Heavenly next week.
The trailer for the film, simply titled Kneecap has finally been released. It’s a larger-than-life origin story of the band in Belfast along with a story of keeping the Irish language and identity alive.
The film, directed by Rich Peppiatt, stars Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award nominated Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave), Simone Kirby (Hidden Assets, Jimmy’s Hall) and Josie Walker (Belfast, The Wonder). Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.
The film is released August 8th in Ireland and August 23rd in the UK.
