Jessica Pratt

Live Is

The LA songwriter Jessica Pratt is back with a new album this May 3rd on City Slang called Here In The Pitch.

The artist’s first album since 2019’s Quiet Signs is preceded by the single ‘Life Is’ a song which channels a bit of Nico in its tone, and feels like a recording of that Velvet Underground era and in the artist’s words – “big panoramic sounds that make you think of the ocean and California” . Walker Brothers’ ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’ is also mentioned as a 60s pop influence.

The album features nine songs, with timpani, glockenspiel, baritone saxophone, and flute alongside Pratt’s singular voice, though Pratt says the song and album opener ‘Life Is’ is “kind of a false flag”, as the rest of the album features the artist’s trademark smaller intimate folk songwriting style.

Kim Gordon

I’m A Man

Ex Sonic Youth musician Kim Gordon is set to release her second solo album entitled The Collective on March 8th on Matador.

‘I’m A Man’ is a low-slung guitar dragged on the floor track with industrial sounds and trap low end bubbling churn under Gordon’s spoken word. The track’s raw metallic dub follows the similarly churning minimalism of ‘Bye Bye’ .

3.

Schoolboy Q

Yeern 101

After two previous singles, ‘Back n Love’ ft Devin Malik and ‘Blue Slides’, Schoolboy Q drops the booming clap trap track ‘Yeern 101’, which is the first official single off His sixth studio album BLUE LIPS out on TDE/Interscope Records on March 1st.

4.

Tomike

By The River

Anyone who has been following Tomike like I have, won’t be surprised by this groovy dance house banger style on new song ‘By The River’. Tomike is low-key dropping superior tracks consistently.

5.

Georgia

Too Much Too Little

After last year’s more subdued production style of second album Euphoria, Georgia returns to the day-glow dance style of her excellent debut album Seeking Thrills.

It’s a once-off single for now but more of this please.

6.

Four Tet

Daydream Repeat

A clash of Kieran Hebden’s styles with a rough feedback-heavy noise contrasting with a sweet birdsong melody, which serves as the announcement of his new Four Tet album Three, on March 15th on his own label TEXT.

The album also features ‘Loved’ and ‘Three Drums’.

7.

OMNI

Compliment

Atlanta band Omni released their fourth album Souvenir (and second for Sub Pop), and I previously featured the slinky alt-rock of ‘Plastic Pyramid’, and you can add ‘Compliment’ to that lovely pile (and our weekly playlist).

OMNI play Dublin on April 14th.

8.

Lime Garden

Pop Star

Brighton indie-rock band release their debut. They play Workman’s Club on March 2nd with support from Skinner. ‘Pop Star‘ is a catchy standout from the One More Thing album.

9.

Polygonia

Jin Dou Yun

I’m a sucker for bright arpeggiated synths and ‘Jin Dou Yun’ from Munich producer Lindsey Wang aka Polygonia is practically bubbling.

The EP is features on, Da Nao Tian Gong is influenced by beloved childhood cartoon, itself inspired by the ancient Chinese legend ‘Journey to the West’ and the iconic character Sun Wukong.

In a retro-modern twist, the tracks vividly depict Sun Wukong’s essence: ‘Jindou Yun’ embodies the swiftness of his cloud, ‘Shen Wai Shenfa’ invokes his magical hair with tribal rhythms, ‘Ruyi Jingu Bang’ mirrors his legendary staff’s power, and ‘Disha Shu’ portrays his 72 Transformations through vibrant harmonics.

10.

Bklava, bullet tooth

Makes Me (Wanna)

Irish Lebanese producer and singer Bklava comes through with a wobbly future speed-garage banger, a lead track from the c u l8r EP pitched as an ode to club culture, out 7 June 2024 on Suga Spin Records.

“‘Makes Me (Wanna Move)’ is a speed garage number that nods to the wobbly baselines of the early 2000s that paved the way for dubstep. When writing new music, I’ll always draw on my inspirations and reminisce on prominent moments in my life and how they affected me at that time. With my focus on club music, I looked back at all the times I’ve been in those dark, sweaty, intimate spaces with my person and wanted to write about the emotions that can take over when you’re both connected in that moment. I always love a track with a heavy bassline juxtaposed with a sweet vocal and I wanted to pay homage to these inspirations and put my spin on that with Bullet Tooth who’s paving the way in the UK bass scene right now.”
