Marquis Hawkes

We Should Be Free feat. Jamie Lidell

The golden soul voice of English singer Jamie Lidell doesn’t get utilised on joyful dance music as much as it should. Which is why this feature on Berlin-based UK producer Marquis Hawkes is such a delight. It’s a seven-minute house track on which Lidell puts on an exalted and transcendental soul singer show.

2.

River Yarra

Respiration Alternée avec Elen Huynh

Delightful bright ambient-house style from an Australian producer from an EP called Lucky Boy that I’d recommend every track from.

Parquet Courts

Wide Awake! (Danny Krivit remix)

Danger Mouse is at the controls for Parquet Court’s newest album Wide Awake! and has given the band a sharpness that wasn’t obvious on previous releases. The title song is a surprising twist for the band into punk-funk and has since been remixed for the dancefloor by vintage NYC DJ Danny Krivit.

Christine & The Queens

Girlfriend (Palms Trax remix / Gerd Jansen Balearic remix / Dam Funk extended remix)

Look, I couldn’t pick a favourite in this suite of remixes of ‘Girlfriend’ from Gerd Jansen’s summery Balearic take to Dam Funk’s 12″ extended version to the electro pulse of Palms Trax, everyone’s a winner.

5.

Fieh

25

Smooth second single from a Norwegian eight-piece band Fieh lead by the sweet voice of Sofie Tollefsbøl.

Orquesta De La Nube

Ella No Lleva Gafas

Orquesta De Las Nubes’ The Order Of Change is a compilation of tracks from the ’80s Spanish band Orquesta De La Nube lead by Suso Sáiz that leaned into new age and ambient music, and I really dig this Mariah-style tune.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

Time In Common

8.

Taking their cues from ’80s college rock and Australian bands like The Go-Betweens and R.E.M comes this highlight from thekir new record Hope Downs on Sub Pop Records. It’s an old-fashioned thrill and you can catch them at Whelan’s on August 21st.

Sofi Tukker

Good Time Girl

They only played Dublin last week but with the electro-pop duo are dropping songs and videos from their new album Treehouse with regularity (‘Benadryl’ just appeared too). ‘Good Time Girl’ features singer Charlie Barker. It’s a fun bop.

9.

Viagra Boys

Sports

Stockholm punk-ish band Viagra Boys who sound too cool for their own good nail a nonsensical jam that you want to repeat. Bonus points for background sax.

Dorian Concept

Promises

Austrian Oliver Thomas Johnson’s second DC album was a Nialler9 favourite. It’s been four years but the sound of that album is unique enough to be revisited with its warped analogue synths, Wurlitzer piano and exuberant runs bright of melodies. Johnson brings most of that back plus a sense of dizzy sonic adventure that brings some freshness to the table. See also, ‘J Buyers’.

The Nature of Imitation is released 3 August 2018 on Brainfeeder.
