Friday was release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.
See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks.
Black Country, New Road – ‘Science Fair’
The seven-piece Cambridge band were one of the highlights of the only live music festival I went to this year at Eurosonic. Black Country, New Road are a unique prospect and the signing of the band to a label like Ninja Tune, normally known for more rhythmic music, is on the surface a surprising one. But the label has always backed unique talent, and Black Country, New Road’s sprawling literate post-punk free-jazz is certainly individual.
Black Country, New Road’s debut six-track album For The First Time comes out on the label on February 5th 2021.
They are also due to play Whelan’s, Dublin on Saturday February 27th 2021 but as with all live gigs that event will be TBC til closer to the event.
Empress Of & Amber Mark – ‘You’ve Got To Feel’
Lorely Rodriguez follows up her I’m Your Empress Of album from earlier this year by taking production duties for the Amber Mark-sung track that is undoubtedly about this week’s American Election.
The track is the first on Empress Of’s own record label Major Arcana.
Mango x Mathman – ‘Chest Out’ (Bon Voyage Tea Time remix)
My favourite track from Mango x Mathman’s Casual Remix EP, is this big room shaker from Bon Voyage.
Mogwai – ‘Dry Fantasy’
New Mogwai music is always welcome and especially in times of turmoil. Their new album As The Love Continues will be released on February 19th 2021 and features appearances from Colin Stetson and Atticus Ross. Dave Fridmann produced.
The Avalanches – ‘Interstellar Love’ featuring Leon Bridges
Another beautiful celestial track from The Avalanches’ forthcoming album We Will Always Love You, due December 11th.
Tierra Whack – ‘Dora’
Tierra Whack is as much as visual artist as a rap one and ‘Dora’ continues her whack off-kilter world view.
SG Lewis – ‘Feed The Fire’ feat. Lucky Daye
After the Robyn and Channel Tres-featuring ‘Impact’ and this soft French Touch-inspired single, I’m excited to hear the debut album out in February 2021.
Beesmunt Soundsytem – ‘Bredius 1998’
A dark electro spinner from Beesmunt on Hivern Discs.
Nealo – ‘All The Leaves Are Falling’ with Molly Sterling
Nealo’s debut album All The Leaves Are Falling is a reflective narrative-driven album charting the Dubliner’s travels and links to home and the title track is an emotionally-charged highlight.
April – ‘Would You Let Me In?’
One of the Kildare R&B artist’s first songs finally sees the light of day in release form on the just released EP Luna. The track is produced by Kojaque.
Malaki, Matthew Harris – ‘Someone Like You 2’
Malaki offered us some sound advice on last week’s podcast special and here, the Dubliner reimagines Van Morrison’s ‘Someone Like You,’ with Matthew Harris on backing vocals.
