Jim White and Marisa Anderson for Dundalk bookshop gig

Avatar

After a recent Dublin gig, the duo of Jim White & Marisa Anderson are back later this month for a different gig proposition.

White is known as a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris; Anderson uses the guitar in ways that reimagine American music, and the duo will be playing a once-off gig at Roe River Books in Dundalk on Saturday September 21st.

The gig is presented by Culture Club and An Tain Arts Centre, and features support from Mark Corcoran and Zoe Backwell, along with an exhibition of polaroids by Dundalk artist John Connolly.

The gig kicks off at 7pm, and tickets are €15 plus fee.

Jim White and Marisa Anderson

The collaboration between renowned drummer Jim White and acclaimed guitarist Marisa Anderson is a natural union of two of the most intuitive players and listeners working in music. White and Anderson are each very in-demand as collaborators in no small part because of their mastery, versatility and highly expressive playing. The duo have each amassed an impressive body of work, and remain at the vanguard of their practices due to an insatiable curiosity and delight in exploration of new avenues of expression. Their 2020 debut The Quickening exemplified that daring spirit as an exercise in trust: two musicians who had never performed together before committing those first moments in time to record. 2024’s Swallowtail is a deepening of that trust, White and Anderson completely immersed in the moment, each attuned to the other fluidly moving as wind and water.

Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz and gospel and country music, re-imagining the landscape of American music. Onstage, she is a master storyteller, bringing warmth, wit and insight to her virtuosic compositions and arrangements. Classically trained, she honed her skills playing in country, jazz and circus bands. In 2011 she released her first solo guitar record, The Golden Hour followed by Mercury (2013), Traditional and Public Domain Songs (2013) Into The Light (2016), and Cloud Corner (2018). Anderson is in demand as a collaborator and composer, contributing to recordings by Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten. Originally from Northern California, Anderson dropped out of college at age nineteen to walk across the US and eventually landed in Portland, Oregon, where she currently lives.

Jim White is simply one of the greatest drummers in the world. He made his name with Dirty Three, with Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) and Mick Turner, who’s live shows have to be experienced to be believed. Those who saw them in the Spirit Store in 2004 will never forget that show. Jim played on some of the greatest records of the past 30 years PJ Harvey, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Bill Callahan, Cat Power, Nina Nastasia. His collaboration with Cretan musician George Xylouris has yielded several albums. This year Jim released his first solo album ‘All Hits: Memories’ produced by Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto.
