THEATRE are Limerick alt-noise-makers who have just today released their debut single after a year or so of high profile live supports and cosigns from bands like Gurriers.
The band have supported DIIV, English Teacher, Shame, Westside Cowboy and festival shows at Manchester Psych Fest and End Of The Road, all without a single out til today, released on BMG / Echo.
THEATRE are a five-piece of Maeve O’Shea, Dara Gooney, Oscar Halpin, Gerry Sheil and Sean Storan with influences cited include Lankum, Just Mustard, and Sinead O’Connor.
‘The Fall’ certainly recalls their Dundalk alt-rock peers Just Mustard in its dirgey alternative guitar tones with yes, a clear throughline to Sinead O’Connor felt too, especially in the chorus. It also has a shoegazey essence to it no doubt about it.
The song was premiered by Steve Lamacq last night on BBC Six Music. Watch the video by Keelin Sutcliffe, shot in The Grand Social and Ardgillan Castle. Cinematography by Greg Purcell:
“’The Fall’ tells the story of a broken friendship, a changeling like person, and the torment that comes with loving someone as toxic as that. Writing the song was the light at the end of the tunnel of a very dark time. Not only was it the first song that people took notice of and that propelled us into gigging full time, it also was the first song that had a fully fleshed theme and story, and it was the first time we realised that a song could metamorphose a negative experience into art.”
THEATRE will support Bleech 9:3 in May in the UK, before a summer on the festival circuit including Brighton new music The Great Escape festival.
