I went to Messiah J & the Expert in Whelans on Saturday night and they were fantastic, so glad I got to see them live. I’m surprised I lasted til the end as I had one of those Saturdays where you start drinking shortly after noon and feel out of step with the rest of society for the rest of the day. It was great fun though.
Anyway, MJEX haven’t a chance at winning the Choice Music Prize at the end of the month (Paddy Power has their odds at 25-1, the largest odds of all the bands) but at least they’re getting the recognition.
There’s a video up of “Something Outta Nothing” from Whelans on Youtoob courtesy of Timmo11.
Here’s two older tunes off their first release from their site which they played at the gig that night. One is a remix but it’s goooood. Anybody know if Formica are still recording under a different name or otherwise?

or 8/10)
Yeah, pity the new/interesting/alternative shit usually stands little chance amongst the surplus of guitar-based entries 🙁

You said it Mike. I suspect that the only reason MJEX were nominated is so the Choice Music awards could claim to have some sort of diversity in their nominees in order to avoid criticism. Well over 100 albums released in Ireland this year and snow patrol and director get in, it brings a tear to my eye. i might pick up a guitar and write a whiney song about it and get nominated myself next year 😉
