New record shop opens in Limerick city – Downbeat Records

Avatar

A new record shop has opened in Limerick city.

Adding to the recent addition of vinyl-lead record shop at Racket Space in Dublin with Absys Records, Downbeat Records has been opened by Frankie O’Mahony, and specialises in records for DJs and collectors, dance and world music.

O’Mahony says of the new shop is inspired by his time working at Idle Hands Records in Bristol.

“It’s the only record store Ive worked in that had a deep sense of community with local musicians/producers/DJs and collectors,” says O’Mahony. “I have always found it challenging that the majority of social link ups between musicians tends to be in late night venues with super loud music and loads of booze. I like all these things but I also need somewhere to socialise, chat music and find new sounds during the day. This is what I’m trying to provide the local community. A store that is itself dedicated to the local scene, underground music and the fringe. The shop is a safe space for all types of people.”

Downbeat stocks a curated collection of reggae, soul, funk, house, techno, synth pop, Japanese, Brazilian and African records, along with folk, pop and rock of the ’60s and ’70s. And there are listening decks to preview too.
