Rob de Boer drops jazz dance music video set in Irish pub for ‘Our Own Way’

The Irish artist Rob De Boer has released a smooth soul jazz new solo track and video.

‘Our Own Way’ is a soulful bright jazzy lounge-leaning song from the Irish-Dutch multi-instrumentalist, producer and visual artist, who is also a member of Papa Romeo and Frank Zing.

The single is from Rob’s forthcoming album Man To You, to be released on May 16th, via Bridge The Gap.

The music video is also particularly noteworthy, a sumptuous choreographed dance move video shot in an Irish pub, that “re-contextualises 1950-70s Bob Fosse, New York jazz-dance.”

Rob also served as the videographer for the video.

Rob recently released the single ‘Autumn Haze’ .

Of ‘Our Own Way’ Rob says:

“It explores the idea that we’re all on our own path and going through different stages – aging, settling down, finding partners, starting families – I like to think the bounciness of the chords and lyrics convey this movement as well.”

For the video Rob got in touch with co-director Douglas Reddan and art director Lucy Bowen with an idea for a jazz-dance oriented video.

“I imagined scenes from dim New York Jazz clubs and the vivid dance worlds of Bob Fosse, but I wondered how we could put our own spin on that aesthetic and rework it to better reflect the Irish context of the song and the storytelling. An old school Irish pub felt more fitting as a backdrop for a story about nostalgia and friendships.”

The forthcoming album is inspired by the work of classic artists like Bill Withers, along with modern alternative soul-jazz crossover artists, including Oscar Jerome, Puma Blue and Michael Kiwanuka.

“When I write songs, things come out of me that I might not otherwise get a chance to articulate. These songs allowed me to process my own experiences relating to my sexuality and identity, and present an opportunity to share my experience and vulnerability with others.”
