Vicar Street is set to expand into a hotel and increase its capacity. The change will bring about an increase of 500 in seated capacity and feature a 185-bedroom 4-star hotel which is said to offer a ‘rock and room’ theme.
Planning permission has been granted for the expansion, according to reports.
Dublin promoter Enthusiastic Eunuch Promotions wondered on Twitter how this change will have an effect on the music industry in Dublin especially when it comes to mid-sized venues. Presumably the venue can adapt to different sizes? That’s to be determined.
If Vicar St increases to 2,000 capacity then there will be no venue left in Dublin city to cater for crowds of 800 – 1500 & there’s already ENORMOUS pressure on getting smaller venues with less than 6 months lead-in. City is in total crisis and it’s hiding in plain sight

This brings about a strange time within the Irish music scene with the closure of venues like Hangar last week and District 8 also due to close next year, leaving the capital city with a distinct lack of venue options.
