Watch: Dev Hynes dons a wig & cello in video for Blood Orange’s ‘Benzo’

The track is taken from Blood Orange’s new mixtape Angel’s Pulse.

Blood Orange, the moniker of Dev Hynes, can do no wrong. At least, it does tend to feel that way.

The very alternative R&B act just dropped Angel’s Pulse, a mixtape described as the epilogue t 2018’s Negro Swan. That project was beloved here at Nialler9, easily landing its way into our top ten albums of the year.

Angel’s Pulse is definitely a rougher affair. While some of the tracks, like ‘Benzo’ and the mixtape’s opener ‘I Wanna C U’ are straight up gold, much of the tape feels a little like leftovers from the Negro Swan sessions. Given the quality of that record, that’s not exactly a bad thing. It’s just hard to see the two projects as totally distinct from one another.

In any case, a video for ‘Benzo’ has been released today. The video is shot largely in period costume and features a wigged Hynes performing a tune to his longtime collaborator Ian Isiah on the Cello.

Happy watching.
