A rare Lumo Club late night out this Saturday with the original trio in the best-sounding Chinese restaurant in the city?
Lumo Club generally play disco, edits, electronic, pop, Italo disco, ’80s jams, 90s/2000s dance, current bangers, curveballs and classics. Lumo is a house party-style club night in the best night spaces in Dublin that brings the soundest dancing crowd around. Here’s what the trio of myself, Simon and Gavin have in the bag ahead of the party this Saturday night.
Gavin Elsted
Zohra – Badala Zamana
Been listening to this a lot since hearing Johnny Alpha (ex Alphabet Set) play it in Grand Stretch and of course there’s a Soulwax edit which is its own stamp of approval. Feelgood vibes from minute one.
R. Stevie Moore – Thousands of Days
I’m an indie fella at heart so any chance I get to recontextualise some lo-fi majesty from the king of the four track I’m gonna take it. Rhythm section straight from the dance-punk playbook.
PBR Streetgang – Late Nite Party Line
Every so often I listen back to playlists I made up for previous Lumos to remind myself of forgotten bangers and this is one. Went through a huge phase of machine-driven house and disco (see also ‘Sacred’ by Parple and a lot of the late 2010s-Hivern Discs output) and this ticks the boxes to raise the energy again if things are flagging a bit.
COEO – Habibi Dub (Mix & Fairbanks Remix)
See above – had forgotten about this thumper from Newbridge’s most gruesome twosome. The original is excellent but there’s something about the spin M&F put on this that just elevates it that bit more. Is Ocarina House a thing?
Pete Blaker – Zulu
Quality edit from a long line of quality edits by Pete Blaker. Have yet to hear one that is a) bad and b) under 8 minutes long. Knows how to keep things interesting while giving the source material a good stretch.
Peter Gabriel – Big Time
Recently I rewatched the South Bank Show PG did around the making of ‘Security’ which prompted a listen through his back catalogue. I haven’t played this at Lumo yet and I think I’ll rectify that this month.
Simon Roche
Faze Action ft. Zeke Manyika – Batanayi (Instrumental)
Every time Faze Action drop a track the sun breaks through. Choosing the instrumental of this release – it front-loads the light, seasonal mood without fuss.
Ahoy Captain’ Edits, Françoise Hardy – V.I.P (Cap’ Celestial Paris Orly Edit)
A staple inclusion of an Ahoy – Captain’ Edits track, and I have convinced myself that this Françoise Hardy rerub helps my French. Summer on the way.
Public Image Ltd. – Warrior
I saw Public Image Ltd. live for the first time last week and this track came on like a lost New Order number. Absolute stomper.
Spandau Ballet – To Cut A Long Story Short (Whitesquare Club Edit)
A dear friend of mine in Brussels is one of best diggers and selectors I have ever met and Stuart (aka Disqueo) gifted me this delicious find last week.
Hazell Dean – Who’s Leaving Who
Staying up late watching old 80s Top of the Pops shows ALWAYS yields some forgotten belter. This has strong ABBA qualities, as an added bonus.
Ruth Radelet, Nat Walker, Adam Miller – The Wild Unknown (Club Remix)
75% of the untouchable Chromatics returned last year with a few excellent, fresh tunes, and they just released this clubbier version of one. You could open and close any 6 hour set with this.
Nialler9
Pianoman – Pasion (Alex Kassian’s Mandarine Dream)
Tangerine Dream’s ‘Love On A Real Train’ is one of the greatest, most breathaking synth songs of all-time, and I’ve been on the look out for a dance remix for my DJ sets that keeps the original’s soft cascading melody. Luckily, Job Jobse’s label Planet Strangelove has put out remixes of an inspired ’90s version by Leeds producer’s Pianoman featuring this Alex Kassian remix along with a dreamy version and a remix from The Trip along with the original ’90s version. Euphoric bliss.
Fundido – Get A Grip
Sound the alarm, it’s a new DFA Records dancefloor release and hold yourself together now, it’s got an indie sleaze with nonchalant vocal delivery vibe.
No shade in any way – I lap this shit up, and anyone with an ounce of dancefloor bounce should too.
‘Get A Grip’ from a Brooklyn-based Fundido, who are Latane Hughes, Billy Scher and producer Miles Felix, with Emma Dufaux on vocals – operating in that sleazy post-Fcukers slipstream except that it could easily have come out in 2004.
Adding to the fun is the square wavey bassline and pristine defenestration-in-slow-motion production, and three remixes from Make A Dance, Asa Tate and Bliss.
DJ Subaru – Dog feat. Chopper Johnson
Lumo loves Italo and this track from Leeds producer Subaru was released on Palms Trax’s CWPT label has the Italo DNA with some sleaze punk guitar energy. ‘Rush’ on the release is also worth a goo for a similar energy.
Lauer – Rabbits
Propulsive electronic productions in widescreen is Lauer’s middle name.
Ski Sunday Theme Tune
Curveball?
Anne Clark – Our Darkness
A 1984 proto-house electro song with punk poet Clark that recently got a reissue.
Lumo Club @ Hang Dai – Saturday May 9th, 11pm.
