Last May, London trio Sunless ’97 got my attention through a swirling synths and sax track ‘Body Weather’. New song ‘Aurora I’ is the first of a diptych of songs about the early morning, according to the band: “Both songs are about dawn, about the two opposite spectrums of a relationship with that time of day. The ‘never lonely’ lyric in ‘Aurora I’ is key to the feeling of that song. The euphoric vibes of walking home after a night of dancing, feeling content, at peace and not ‘lonely’ even though you are walking home alone.”
Music can rarely sound better than a night after return journey on your own with just a pair of headphones. Maybe you feel slightly worse for wear and this track has that hopeful optimism you need. It’s a mood-based jam rather than a structured track, uplifting with a jazz/dub breakdown and carefree abandon.
