Premiere: Kobina's remix of 'The Back Of Her' frames Junior Brother's music in a whole new light

Two worlds collide and we’re here for it.
Ciaran O'Maolain (Junior Brother) / Annable van Royen (Kobina)

Bet you didn’t expect that did you?

Amsterdam-based Irish electronic producer Kobina and Kerry folk-artist Junior Brother have teamed up to deliver a downtempo, nigh on chillwave remix of the latter’s track ‘The Back Of Her’

Both artists are billed to perform at Another Love Story this weekend, so the timing couldn’t be any better.

We were definitely a bit surprised to hear Ronan’s vocals placed into this kind of setting, but the result is a very cohesive melding of two different sound worlds. Massive props are due to Kobina not only for the vocal treatment, but for the arrangement which the producer places behind it.

There’s an almost neo-trap feel to the hi-hat patterns on the cut, like something you’d find on a Ninajirachi song. Gloomy synth pads line the mix, with sustained chords leaving plenty of room for Ronan’s vocals to take centre stage. Added reverb adds all the necessary atmosphere.

The section in which Ronan’s vocal is actually cut and skewed are grin-inducing.

Catch both Kobina and Junior Brother at Another Love Story this weekend.
