With London club Fabric currently fighting its closure, many artists and producers who have played at the club have contributed a track each to help cover the significant legal costs involved in the fight to stop the revoke of the license by Islington Council and the closure of the club.

After some conversations with friends about dubstep recently, I thought I’d put up some tunes from last year to serve as a catchup/beginners guide to the genre and its surrounds. I’m by no means an expert but over the next two pages you’ll find my favourites from Burial, Zomby, Joker, Peverelist, Benga, Skream, Samiyam, Darkstar, 2000F, Joy Orbison, King Midas Sound, Kode 9, Guido and more.

Please put your own must-listens in the comments.

Burial (with Four Tet)

Enigmatic dubstepper Burial and electronic experimentaller Four Tet combined on a 12″ last year which had two tracks at 18 minutes in length total. ‘Moth’ was the standout track of the two (the other being ‘Wolf Cub’). Perfectly combining Four Tet’s ability to chop up percussion samples in inventive ways with Burial’s ability to produce some growling yet almost supernatural sub-bass. (more…)

“I was confused when I first heard this: all of a sudden, our song sounded like a Bone Thugs record. That’s because I couldn’t hear Skream’s satanic sub-bass on my computer speakers. Then I switched systems and it made perfect sense. Play this loud and you’ll hear all the hypnotic qualities you’d expect from the grand wizard of UK dubstep.”

Dave 1 of Chromeo

Another great remix from Skream.

batforlashes I wasn’t a huge fan of Natasha Khan aka Bat for Lashes’ second LP Two Suns save for ‘Daniel’, ‘Glass’ and this tune ‘Pearl’s Dream’ which has now been given a dubsteppy rework from man of the hour Skream. It’s heavy, it’s got added glitchy dub beats and sub-bass.

What more can you ask for?

After a couple of years of ignorance, I’m now totally on the Chromeo train. They’re cheesy as hell but brilliantly so. This is their new one. It’s some ‘Eye of the Tiger’ shit. Look out for a Skream remix soon.

Update: Download the single for free from Green Label Sound.

They’ve got a DJ Kicks comp out this month and the site has a 15 minute stream. This also appears on it. It’s a cover of The Eagles’ ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’.

I usually hate that particular style of house/garage vocal that always ends up with a “feelin’ you baby” kind of vibe but when it’s Skream doing a rework on a Geiom track it’s always worth a listen. I’m glad I did – this tune is like a drum and bass/two-step/dubstep hybrid and is a salivator. The 12″ has a Shackleton remix also.

Geiom – Reminissin’ (Skream’s Time Traveller Refix)

Skream has been doing some good things this year after a period of relative quiet. The constant low-end dub of ‘Percression’ is from the recent Hedd Banger EP and of course, if you listen to any dubstep mixes in the last while you’ll have heard half of Skreamism Vol. 5. I love ‘Fick’ from it though, it’s a lot more banging and off-kilter than the norm.
