I try not to pigeonhole bands into genres too much but in Battles case, I’ll make an exception. Their music is math rock through and through. According to Wikipedia, math rock can be “characterised by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, stop/start dynamics and angular, dissonant riffs.“. One of the band is former guitarist from math rock pioneers Don Cabellero. Battles’ music sounds a bit like Four Tet using a traditional band setup and this comparison is fitting as he is one of their Top 8 friends on their Myspace page. Clearly an influence.
The band recently signed to Warp Records and so are currently on tour in Europe this Summer. Their live shows are supposedly incredible so they may be worth checking out when they hit Irish shores to play a gig in Whelans on the 17th of July. I’m thinking they may be comparable to The Redneck Manifesto. As for releases, so far there has been two EPs ‘EP B’ and ‘EP C’ both which were compiled onto a double CD early this year on Warp called EP B/EP C funnily enough. I really like the song below ‘Tras’ but I think that Battles are first and foremost a live band and thats where ultimately they can be judged. Tour dates on their Myspace page.
