I’ve always found it easier to get into rap artists through albums rather than singles. Rap albums are often sprawling messes but if a rapper gets it right in the quality control department then they get my eternal gratitude. The latest rap album to receive it (and there’s not many solid rap albums these days) is Outkast Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The hype for this album has been pretty big online and on my Twitter feed. I finally heard it yesterday and it’s solid. ‘General Patton’ (above) is the tune that did it for me with it’s choir-assisted big brass swagger. It features guest turns from Janelle Monae, Gucci Mane, George Clinton, Yelawolf, Jamie Foxx, B.O.B and Sleepy Brown but the star is Big Boi. The Pitchfork review sums it up nicely. More listening required but for now let’s give it a on-repeat #nowplaying status.
If you haven’t got your hands on the album yet, the Big Boi Mixtape for Dummies is still available as a free download or for listening. You can also get the Daddy Fat Sacks mixtape via Hypetrak.
