clipping. – ‘Work Work’
clipping. who are one of Sub Pop’s latest signings, sonically fit in with a roster that includes Shabazz Palaces and Mogwai. There’s an uncompromising avant-noise-element to the group’s generally left-of-field hip-hop.
The trio, Jonathan Snipes, William Hutson and rapper Daveed Diggs round the edges with the language of mainstream rap, especially on new single ‘Work Work’, a powerhouse clash of weirdness and recognisable almost DJ Mustard-style rap production.
Indeed, an emcee who featured on Mustard’s Ketchup mixtape makes an appearance here in a Minaj-style showstealer. In the brilliant video for the track by Carlos Lopez Estrada (one of my favourites of the year so far), Cocc Pistol Cree’s foot hangs over the head of a curb-biting Diggs as the camera eerily stalks the scene which suits the song’s menacing bass atmosphere. I’m really loving this.
Clipping.’s debut album is out in early June on Sub Pop. Their first mixtape is on Bandcamp for free.
Here’s another track ‘Body and Blood’
