Friday was release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.

See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks.

Oscar #Worldpeace – ‘Lightspeed’

London artist Oscar #Worldpeace drops a short 10–minute EP called His And Hers, of short and sweet atmospheric beat rap productions, that leads with this memorable track.

Tierra Whack – ‘Peppers and Onions’

Tierra Whack dropped two new songs this week – ‘Peppers And Onions’ and ‘Feel Good’ . The latter is a downbeat minute plus of realism while the former slaps with whistles and mouth noises embedded in its rhythm. There’s an undercurrent of vulnerability to the song’s bouncy style all the same.

Slowthai -‘nhs’

slowthai announced a new album Tyron, to be released on February 5th 2021 with new introspective single ‘nhs’.

Bill Callahan & Bonnie Prince Billy ‘Deacon Blues’ (feat. Bill MacKay)

Look, you didn’t know you needed this but here’s Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy covering a Steely Dan classic.

Smoothboi Ezra – ‘My Own Person’

18-year-old Greystones songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Smoothboi Ezra (pronouns: they/them) comes through with a vulnerable indie song with sparkling melodic chops about self-identity

“I wrote this song when I was 16. I had one or two outfits I would interchange and I wore the same grubby pair of shoes every day. They were replicas of a previous grubby pair I wore when I was 14 and 15.  The song is about not being happy but not being able to do anything about it.”

Empress Of – ‘Broken’

A new song from Empress Of is an automatic win for me. This is from the soundtrack to new Amazon drama The Wilds.

Thumper – ‘Topher Grace’ (Aonair remix)

Thumper release a package of remixes of recent single ‘Topher Grace’ with this Soulwax-style Aonair one standing out for me. There are also remixes from SENU and Russel Grand.

Omonoko – ‘Weight In Gold’

Having shown some Afro indie vibes here before, the Newry four-piece Omonoko impress with a similar tilting follow up.

Jordan Run – ‘Seventeen’

Cork artist Jordan Run released a song about mental health today and all proceeds go towards Pieta House.

Sal Dulu – ‘B’ feat. Koncept Jack$on

Dublin producer Sal Dulu dropped a new wavy beat track featuring Richmond, Virginia artist Koncept Jack$on. It’s from a debut album Xompulse which is out via Duluoz Records on February 19th. Reminds me of Dabrye.

Audrey Nuna – ‘Damn Right’

This song from the Korean/American artist started playing after Tierra Whack on Youtube and I dig it.
