New Albums
Jon Hopkins – Ritual
Described as “a 41-minute electronic symphony built from cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming and transcendent melodic interplay,” Ritual is also a more “kinetic counterpart” to 2021’s ambient Music For Psychedelic Therapy, and came out of a commission to compose for the stroboscopic Dreamachine experience in London.
The album is one long piece divided into chapters, with inspirations from ideas of “ceremony, spiritual liberation and the hero’s journey,” it also features collaborators Vylana, 7RAYS, Ishq, Clark, Emma Smith, Daisy Vatalaro and Cherif Hashizume.
Seefeel – Everything Squared
The Warp Records electronic duo’s first new material since 2011, recaptures the imagination with its ambient ’90s-indebted fusion of ambient, experimental electronic music with nods to dub and shoegaze. Seefeel make use of indistinct eerie vocal samples.
Laurie Anderson – Amelia
Amelia Earhart-inspired album from the American experimental artist, comprises twenty-two tracks about the renowned female aviator’s tragic last flight.
Kuma Hana – Kuma Hana
The Cast Of Cheers’ Neil Adams releases a solo album of instrumental electronic music, distilled from 30 tracks into this debut. Adams was inspired by the natural landscapes of Dublin and Wicklow along with sci-fi and space travel. Kuma Hana is filled with lilting gentle melodic synth music and occasional organic instrumentation.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Wild God
Nick Cave has said some redline questionable stuff about playing in Israel and the BDS movement in recent years, but people revere him so it doesn’t seem to affect his popularity. I’ve no time for him. You might. The band’s 18th album is out today. They play Dublin in November.
The Kneecap Film Soundtrack
Soundtrack album. Kneecap movie review – a smart rap caper of substance and language.
Duster – In Dreams
The slowcore band who got a revival for their ’90s albums on Tik Tok and who reformed in 2018, release a fifth album.
Various Artists Speedy Wunderground – vol. 6
A compilation of label tracks all recorded in one day that feature indie Mercury Music Prize nominees English Teacher, experimental jazz rock duo O., English psych singer-songwriter Jane Weaver, Australian band HighSchool, Dutch post-punk group Lewsberg and more.
Yannis & The Yaw – Lagos Paris London EP
Foals’ Yannis Philippakis releases the 5-track he made with the recently-deceased drummer Tony Allen.
Chelsea Wolfe – UNDONE EP
Remix EP of latest album She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She featuring reworks from ††† (Crosses), Full of Hell, Justin K Broadrick (Godflesh), Boy Harsher, and more. Chelsea Wolfe plays Dublin and Belfast in October.
