In a month of stellar instrumental releases from Irish hip hop producers, The Expert, pioneer of the scene and member of the Choice Music Prize-nominated Messiah J & The Expert, is back with a new instrumental hip-hop solo record.
Excursions is 20 tracks of hip-hop bliss. Released on the Cold Busted imprint, Excursions expertly deploys soulful samples, crisp beats and a constant sense of musical experimentation to make for an essential Irish beat collection.
Veering between the funky summer melodies of ‘Oh Yes’ and ‘Firmino’ to more introspective numbers like ‘Troubled Soul’ and the title track, Excursions showcases the dynamism of The Expert’s production chops and casts a light on the essential role he has played in the rise of Irish hip-hop. The Expert says the album is a “melodic trip from beginning to end, suitable for unexpected destinations and extended travels” and it’s a trip we’re happy to join him on.
