Today is International Jazz Day – let’s check in on one of the nation’s most vibrant scenes

Luke Sharkey

Today marks the 10th annual International Jazz Day, as set up by the United Nations in 2011.

As such, its a fantastic time to check in on one of the nation’s most diverse and vibrant music scenes.

Usually, International Jazz Day merits a slew of performances around the nation, but for reasons you understand even if you live under a rock that can’t happen.

Instead, we’re going to receommned some alternative methods by which to aprpeciate the culture.

First and foremost, as always, is the music itself. The Improvised Music Company have put together a playlist of all Irish jazz, it’s wonderful.

Having spent a couple of hours listening to it and being fairly novice at all things jazz, that playlist is definitely an eclectic mix, with something everyone can appreciate.

There’s also a very cool gallery of jazz portraits available over here, if you’re more of a visual person. Remember gigs?

Another impressive outing from Improvised Music Company on International Jazz Day is the virtual jazz club that they’re going to be running on their Facebook page throughout the day.

The event page is right here, they’ll be releasing content and sharing links to Irish related jazz content throughout the day.
