First Listen: We Cut Corners return with an ode to ‘The Specialist’

Ruth Cronin

After a short hiatus, Dublin duo We Cut Corners return with new single ‘The Specialist’, the lead single from We Cut Corners’ upcoming album Impostors which will see release in October 2018.

The song is a departure from the lyric-focused and organic soundscapes that were prevalent on the band’s previous Choice Music Prize-nominated albums The Cadences Of Others and Think Nothing.

‘The Specialist’ is more rock-influenced with an infectious rhythm section guitar hooks, combined with medical lyrical references, “you embody humanity / you embellish it best / you are my favourite one / you are the specialist”.

We Cut Corners - The Specialist

We Cut Corners’ previous three albums have all been critically acclaimed, taking influence from Ryan Adams, Vampire Weekend and Leonard Cohen. The influence of Leonard Cohen is more apparent in the band’s earlier music, while ‘The Specialist’ implies that Vampire Weekend will be more of an influence on Impostors.

We Cut Corners (John Duignan and Conal>Ó Breachain, have become core members of the Irish music scene since their inception in 2010 with their genre spanning music. The multi-faceted band have proven themselves to be versatile in their exploration of genres within their albums so far; the blend of electric guitar and drums lends itself to rock and pop while their delicate lyrics and intricate harmonies also make them accessible to folk and indie fans.

If ‘The Specialist’ is anything to go by, Impostors is set to introduce a new sound and side to We Cut Corners that we have not heard before.

The song will later be accompanied by a remix from Galway producer Daithí.

We Cut Corners will soon be announcing dates across Ireland in October to coincide with the release of Impostors.

The Specialist will see official release on Friday 15th June.
