NZCA Lines
Prisoner Of Love
If you’re looking for an album of sleek electro-pop bangers, get yourself onto NZCA/Lines’ new album Pure Luxury. ‘Prisoner Of Love’ is one of the album’s highlights, a string-assisted disco ball of a song.
2.
Sylvan Esso
Ferris Wheel
Sylvan Esso just announced a new album Free Love, out on September 25th this year after teasing ‘What If’ earlier this week. It’s good to have Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn back, a band whose MO is ““Nick wants things to sound unsettling, but I want you to take your shirt off and dance. We’re trying to make pop songs that aren’t on the radio, because they’re too weird. It’s a pop band, but we’re talking about complicated emotions.”
3.
Leisure
Slipping Away
A band name like that doesn’t help the aul fact-finding mission but Leisure are an experienced collective of songwriters and producers from New Zealand. ‘Slipping Away’ is languorously rich in tone and details.
4.
Tyler Pope
Nur Weil Ich Kann
LCD Soundsystem’s Tyler Pope dropped an EP called Nur Weil Ich Kann EP and the title track is fine metal machine music.
5.
Biig Piig
Don’t Turn Around
Twisting a sample form Claudja Barry’s ‘Love For The Sake Of Love’ (as also sampled by Montell Jordan, Prodigy of Mobb Deep and Poolside), the new track from London-based Irish/Spanish artist moves her craft further into pop-focused R&B jam vibes.
It’s the followup to her best song to date (IMO) – ‘Switch’.
6.
AK Paul
Hungry Beat
Maybe like me, you don’t rifle through Soundcloud feeds anymore so you may have missed a new AK Paul track from May recorded during lockdown. AK Paul is on Instagram now.
7.
Iluminati Hotties
will i get cancelled if i write a song called, “if you were a man you’d be so cancelled”
The LA rock band lead by Sarah Tudzin already have one of the best band names and the opening track of their just released album Free IH: This Is Not The One You’ve Been Waiting For is a doozy thrash song with the great opening line “Let’s smash to a podcast!”
8.
Moodymann
Let Me In
Prolific house producer Moodymann does what Moodymann does best and it’s still like no other. Recent album Taken Away has been revered as one of his best of recent times, with space on the record for soul and funk housed in bruised boogies.
9.
Westside Gunn
Buffs vs. Wires
Buffalo MC Westside Gunn followed up one of our albums of the year so far with the mixtape Flygod Is An Awesome God 2 in early July and this track really flys.
