Oxegen – I ain’t going back to my old school

So Oxegen has officially announced a line-up that includes Arcade Fire, Muse (shudder), Snow Patrol (double shudder), Daft Punk, Razorlight, Bloc Party, Kings Of Leon, Interpol, Tori Amos, Amy Winehouse, CSS, The Fratellis, The Kooks, Babyshambles ( No festival is complete without forty NME *hopefuls* ), Klaxons, James Morrison, The Goo Goo Dolls (LOL!) The Immediate, Channel One and My Chemical Romance (OMFG!).

I feel a twinge of anger that Arcade Fire are tempting me to Oxegen again (It would be 7 years straight) but then I remember I’m seeing them in 10 days so unless the ground shakes and the skies split I won’t be going. Sorry if you didn’t personally get tickets. Although seeing the theatrical MCR would be total ROFL but then I think of the kids with their “MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE SAVED MY LIFE!” battles cries and realise there’s no way I’d choose to be surrounded by 40,000 of them.

MCR

If James Murphy confirms LCD Soundsystem for Oxegen though then I’m going to have to personally hunt him down and hurt him. 🙂

  1. I totally agree with not wanting to be surrounded by all those kids, but I would love to see Arcade Fire, Muse, Snow Patrol, Daft Punk, Razorlight, Kings Of Leon, Interpol, Tori Amos, CSS. And there is nothing laughable about The Goo Goo Dolls!

  3. Interpol at Oxegen two years ago made the festival almost bearable.

As you know, it is an unbearable festival. Thus, Interpol were stratospheric that day. Defo the best Interpol show I’ve seen and one of the best live performances EVER in the history of the world 😉 Arcade Fire (although decent, heh) at EP that year didn’t compare.

    I think it’s worth it again…

  5. Uh-oh… sorry to disagree with you there cahony, but I saw Interpol somewhere (might have even been this show) – all I can remember (and yes, I was all too sober) was being rammed into a tent with a million of the whelans anti-fun ss, and having to remain painfully static due to the “sshhhh – they’ve got guitars/are making art” policy in place. I went to see what all the fuss was about, and didn’t seem to find an answer there anyways… 🙁
    Above all else, fuck oxegen

  7. That’s the only time they’ve played a tent in Ireland, so yes, it must have been that show. You sure you were sober though?

    “Sssshhh”?

You must have missed the spontaneous Ole Ole Ole during the set which seemed to ignite from the electric atmosphere in there which got even the band pleasantly taken aback.

  9. Phil… The Goo Goo Dolls?? Really?? tehe..

Interpol were alright that time. I already had the albums so I reckon that helped. From where we were Mike, I remember the sound being terrible and it was jammers. I didn’t even stay for the full set. Still like them though.

  11. Eeek, were we all at the same gig guys! (It was uncomfortably jammers, I’ll give you that).

From Rachael Darmanin’s blog, editor of independent NYC music mag ‘Underrated’:

“…The Irish must have been saving all the energy for Interpol, who headlined a show in the Green Room. The tent was packed, people were sweaty and full of mud, but the lights shined and the bass started and my god, and it was madness. I had never seen a crowd respond like that, even seeing them play in New York. It was amazing. They started off the set with “Evil” into “Slow Hands” and it didn’t stop. When the last song was played and the band had left, thousands were left standing, clearly ready for some more. Liz didn’t think anyone knew them over here, but I knew differently. To think these NYUers have now taken over the world. Incredible.”

There’s lots of testimony out there about that gig as a stand out show.

  13. Interpol, CSS, Arcade Fire, TORI AMOS (is that confirmed for sure?), Bloc Party…..all fantastic, but what were they thinking when they signed up MCR, for gods sake, thanks for ruining what would have been a great weekend, now the demographics have completely changed.

i for one don’t want to be surrounded by panda eyed kids on their first weekend away from mammy and daddy.

and will that Amy Whinewhinewhinehouse ever piss off, i have never encountered someone so vile, shouldn’t she be busy with T4 and the V festival. Would she ever go to therapy and do us all a favour, take a leap….

  18. “but what were they thinking when they signed up MCR, for gods sake”

i figure they were thinking the same thing they’ve always been thinking, ‘lets find large groups of gullible youngsters and hold them upsidedown by the legs until all the money falls out of their pockets’.

its some shameless rip off of a festival… i’ll be jumping the fence again, to catch arcade fire, css, bloc party and channel one. and also to get plastered and have fun annoying the swarms of emo kids! “i’m not oooookaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!!” MCR saved my pocketmoney and made me buy their cd and t-shirt.

  22. I haven’t been to Oxygen. Sometime in the mid 90’s people stopped saying hello to me at concerts. Maybe it was my ‘Stunning’ t-shirt (oh, the storms they brewed up!). I didn’t mind, the oxygen line up was nothing on the original feile anyway. It sounds like some of you guys are ready to join me. There is usually something good on in the Hazel hotel over that weekend, and a free bus home afterward for the over 65’s.

thats laughable.i was at it last year and it was shit.animal collective,editors(maybe-the sound was too shit for me to actually enjoy them),pretty girls make graves and POSSIBLY giant drag-not to mention in my estimation a storming set by the irish press’ favourite target, humanzi.thats 4 bands.otherwise, the shit food, the shit crowd (the kooks was a clear indication of this) and general bad vibes emanating from every feces-ridden inch of punchestown has sworn me off it for life.if i honestly thought for a second that the general atmosphere of the festival would be changed from preteen pissup extravaganza to laidback mainstream festival i’d go..but not now.on an even more hilarious note,i hear the artic monkeys are playing malahide castle.what the fuck is going on?

  46. been to oxegen the last few years now.its been gettin progressively worse every time, this year is a new low, with maybe 5 decent bands announced.im still makin the trek, however.i state one thing as my reason above all else:DAFT PUNK,MARLAY PARK.absolutely astonishing show.they may be just emailing each other on stage, but the sound, sight and sheer spectacle of it all makes up for the lack of visible performing.

snow patrol:absolute rubbish, helping mcr soil this years lineup.

muse are fantastic live (no daft punk still howver),kings of leon never fail to impress, arcade fire know what makes a good show, and the wu-tang clan have that novelty factor.

holding out for a few more worthwhile bands:lcd soundsystem, the roots, rage (that would be heaven!) qotsa or maybe jarvis cocker.
