The controversial and often brilliant Azealia Banks is set to brighten up a quiet January in The Academy on Januaary 22nd next year.

Tickets from €25.50 on sale Monday 19th November at 10am from Ticketmaster.

Banks while making some great records of late, has been regularly embroiled in controversy and public spats with Grimes and Elon Musk, the former who she was supposed to record with and subsequently began tweeting shade about the then couple. Last year, Russell Crowe allegedly spat at her at a party in 2017.

It’s a long time since she played Whelan’s in 2012.

Her second album Fantasea II: The Second Wave has been promised for a while and we’ve heard ‘Anna Wintour’ and ‘ Treasure Island’ from it:

Yesterday, eminent remixer and Montreal beat producer Kaytranada dropped a ZIP file featuring 19 different remixes, edits and off-cuts.

There’s lots of good stuff in there for your ears and DJ sets including remixes of Missy Elliott, Jay Dee, Jill Scott, Azealia Banks, Ciara and more. There’s original tracks in there too as well as an edit of Chaka Khan’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ titled ‘Forever Lasting Night’

It’s all badly tagged but all very worth your effort. He also separately dropped his remix of Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ this week. Kaytranada has a new EP coming on XL Recordings this summer and plays Electric Picnic this year.

Download the ZIP bundle.

Lots more gold on his Soundcloud.

New songs you should hear this week…

This week’s instalment of new music debuted/heard in the last week features Twin Shadow’s stonking new track from GTA V, NEW CHROMEO EVERYBODY, UK acts Mt. Wolf and Wolf Alice who are obviously easy to confuse, SOHN’s most James Blake-esque track yet ‘Lesson’, boom-bap rock from Sleigh Bells, smoothness from Woman’s Hour as well as Azealia Banks and Four Tet.

There’s also collaborations from Pusha T / Kendrick Lamar, Active Child / Mykki Ekko, a track from M83 member Morgan Kibby’s White Sea and a Bodhi dancefloor rework of Sampha. No Drake doe.

Azealia Banks hasn’t been back to Dublin since that 30-minute Whelan’s set last January and that’s about to be rectified by a show in The Academy on June 26th. Tickets are €22.90 plus fees on sale this Tuesday March 26th at 9am from Ticketmaster.

Meanwhile, despite various Twitter spats taking up the chat about her recently, her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste is coming out this summer but no date is confirmed yet, though Pharrell and supposedly these two tracks will feature.

It appeared that Azealia Banks was ready to derail her own hype train a few weeks ago. Cancellations of summer festival appearances, manager changes and a push back of her planned 1991 EP weren’t necessarily bad ideas. Banks needs to come correct with Broke With Expensive Taste as a killer debut album (it will be out in September) and perhaps taking her time with releases rather than rushing things out is a good idea. In the interim though, Ms. Banks will release a mixtape called Fantastic. This time around, Nick Hook and Hudson Mohawke’s huge hooks and tropical burst prove yet again that Banks can jump on big tracks and make it her own when she wants to.

Rapid-fire flow from AZ as she teams up with Diplo on a marching band beat which appears to be taken/sampled from DJ Master D’s ‘Mad Drums Bubbling’ so it’s not clear exactly what Diplo has done this time around. Also, Ms. Banks needs to stop talking over her productions and just stick to what she’s best at. The tune was debuted at a Chanel party in Japan and may appear on the 212 EP.

There’s no formula for hype but if you wanted a modern example of how to bottle it, Azealia Banks is it. In 2010, she was knocking out club rap tunes like ‘L8R’. Like Rye Rye and Yo Majesty! before her, it was fun but lacked a punch to take it to the next level.

Well that level hit 18 months on, when Banks debuted ‘212’ with the backing of a slew of producers like Lazy Jay, Lunice, Jacques Greene and Machinedrum, a deal with a major in Universal and hypehypehype galore. Last night was only the beginning. A Monday night sold out gig in Whelan’s Dublin served as a live debut for her as an artist, an introduction and a salivation of the hype that had already built. Azealia only needed to prove she was a) talented b) cool and c) good live (unlike the less than impressive Karl Lagerfield clip which appeared last week).

Azealia Banks

The seal around Azealia Banks has been broken. There’s no going back to the underground space she occupied for 2011. Kanye’s already emailed her, she’s inevitably on the BBC Sound of 2012 poll and ‘212’ is being noticed by those beyond the blogs and Tumblrs.

The Harlem club rapper’s latest track uses Lone’s ‘Pineapple Crush’ as the backing track for some “liquorice bitch” shit.
