CMAT has surprised released a new song today, a track called ‘Mayday’ – “a very sexy song about climate change,” and is musically inspired by the B52s.
While the song itself is good news, Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson has been forced to cancel this week’s show at Eurosonic due to a neck injury and throat issues (“Unfortunately my larynx is in it’s flop era – she is rotated and has slightly collapsed on one side…)
“Pretty much, you’re not going to see me for quite a while,” says CMAT. “This is a shame because i am so gorgeous, but when i emerge i will have transformed, like a butterfly, in more ways than one.”
CMAT does have solo support dates in Europe in March and rescheduled dates in Cork in May as per below.
Last week was a good week for CMAT, as she was nominated in every possible category in the Choice Music Prize – album, song, artist of the year and breakthrough.
CMAT on the song:
It’s called Mayday. It’s a very sexy song about climate change. I found the inspiration for the song last summer. My boyfriend was on tour and flying into a country that was at the time being evacuated for forest fires. I was so anxious, I kept asking for him to text me when he landed. Eventually he did, like: ‘hey! The runway is on fire’. I thought the human anxieties of the oncoming climate change disaster are something that are either not spoken about, or spoken about in big, sweeping, dramatic statements. I wanted to bring it back down to something pretty mundane and quite funny. Like the musical equivalent of a Coronation Street episode about fracking.
Musically I wanted to do something heavily inspired by the B-52’s, because I love them and their retro-fitted surf rock really is the sound of 60’s nuclear anxiety. I wrote this song with Johnny Latimer and Rich Cooper, who I love, even though we all had a fight over whether or not I should leave the ‘J-F-Care’ line in there. They’re forgiven for trying to get in the way of genius!

CMAT – Mayday Lyrics
What time were you born?
I’m bored again and thinking of you
And wishing you were home
Uh-woah
Wish I could see the stars
We’d look upon the same ones baby
The city makes it hard
Tho I saw that Portugal’s on fire, woo-oo And Mississippi’s underwater too
But all that I m.i.s.s. is you
There’s nothing that I can do!
Why-wy-wy would you go away?
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Why-wy-wy do I need ya dear?
Why-wy-wy wont you say my name?
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Mayday Mayday
Text me when you land
Cuz I am all at sea without you
And falling off the map
Woah-oh It’s minus 10 in Myanmar, woo-oo I’m in Manhattan and it’s 42
The only thing I JF-Care to do Is lie in the sun with you!
Why-wy-wy would you leave me here ?
Why-wy-wy would you go away ?
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Why-wy-wy do I need ya dear?
Why-wy-wy wont you say my name?
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Mayday Mayday
The grass has turned from green to brown
I miss you when you’re not around
I’m running out of time to spend with you
Why-wy-wy would you leave me here ?
Why-wy-wy would you go away ?
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Why-wy-wy do I need ya dear?
You never listen to a word I say!
While the world is ending you should be spending your time with me
Mayday Mayday
