Friday is release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.
See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks we deemed worthy enough of their own article this week.
Benin City – ‘Freakin’ You Out’
Bouncy electro pop vibes from the London trio Benin City that was likened to “doomscrolling disco” and I am here for it.
Black Country, New Road – ‘Opus’
Seven-piece post-rock jazz punk indie band Black Country, New Road released a six-track LP today on Ninja Tune. ‘Opus’ with its twisting rhythms and styles and ,Isaac Woods doing his best Jarvis impression and you’ve got a very nice prospect indeed.
Eomac – ‘What Does Your Heart Tell You?’
One half of Lakker, Ian McDonnell returns with a new release on Planet Mu from his Eomac solo project. ‘What Does Your Heart Tell You?’ leads off the release of the Cracks EP in April with textured and roughed up techno that is quite wistful in tone.
Doubt – ‘Soilse’
Flood Collective’s Doubt drops a once-off single for Bandcamp Friday.
Brent Faiyaz – ‘Gravity’ (with Tyler, The Creator)
This came out last week but it only just hit me right last night.
Jimi Tenor – ‘Forgotten Planet Awakens’
From a new release on Studio Barnhaus that comes with a Ricardo Villalobos remix. Spacey vibes.
Freddie Gibbs – Gang Signs (feat. Schoolboy Q)
I’m not as much of a Freddie Gibbs stan as many music writers seem to be but every now and again he nails it. The addition of Schoolboy Q is a nice touch too.
Joshua Burnside – ‘Under The Concrete’ (Sorbet remix)
The latest in the series of Joshua Burnside remixes comes from Sorbet, aka Chris Ryan of Robocobra Quartet.
Cardi B – ‘Up’
Explicit day-glo video vibes for Cardi’s followup to ‘WAP’.
Octa Octa – ‘Find Your Way Home’
The New Hampshire producer channels early ’90s pop breaks on this absolute stonker of a house track.
Franki – ‘Are You Gonna’
I’ve premiered Franki’s chillwave pop smarts on the site before so it’s good to see the boy get some New Music Friday UK Spotify recognition for this new track today.
THEO – ‘Church & State’
Theo’s last song ‘Jealous’ was only featured here earlier this week and there’s another new one from the Irish London-based R&B artist.
Jack Wins – ‘Set Me Free’
Big weekend dance vibes here.
