Friday is release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.

See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks.

Hot Chip – ‘Straight To The Morning’ (feat. Jarvis Cocker)

After their chilled Late Night Tales compilation, Hot Chip enlist Jarvis for some upbeat dance music yearning for the future on a dancefloor. It was originally written with Dua Lipa in mind and the vinyl comes with a Mighty Mouse remix.

Julien Baker – ‘Faith Healer’

Julien Baker’s new album Little Oblivions will be released on February 26th on Matador.

Julien says: “I think that ‘Faith Healer’ is a song about vices, both the obvious and the more insidious ways that they show up in the human experience. I started writing this song 2 years ago and it began as a very literal examination of addiction. For a while, I only had the first verse, which is just a really candid confrontation of the cognitive dissonance a person who struggles with substance abuse can feel– the overwhelming evidence that this substance is harming you, and the counterintuitive but very real craving for the relief it provides.

When I revisited the song I started thinking about the parallels between the escapism of substance abuse and the other various means of escapism that had occupied a similar, if less easily identifiable, space in my psyche. There are so many channels and behaviors that we use to placate discomfort unhealthily which exist outside the formal definition of addiction. I (and so many other people) are willing to believe whomever– a political pundit, a preacher, a drug dealer, an energy healer– when they promise healing, and how that willingness, however genuine, might actually impede healing.”

Laoise – ‘Healthy’

A smooth track from Laoise with choral vocals and billowy R&B backing is a contrast to her more recent upfront pop songs.

JYellowL – ‘Tunnel Vision’

New single from the Irish rapper from the forthcoming album 2020 D|VISION
Out November 20th. Neptunes vibes.

Biig Piig – ‘Oh No’ / ‘Liahr’

Two new tunes from the Waterford / Spanish / London-based R&B artist.

Caribou – ‘Suddenly’ (Shanti Celeste remix)

New Caribou remixes from Shanti Celeste, Logic 1000, India Jordan and Kareem Ali.

The Gauze – ‘Sleeper’

A new project from Cork from producer Bantum and Ealadha’s Dom Murphy – sinister ambient sounds.

The Staves – ‘Good Woman’

A song this smooth and funk-lite is hard to resist.

Keep Dancing Inc – ‘Old Child’

Indian Wells – New Ruins

New EP from the Italian producer.
