The new single, ‘Disappointing’, from John Grant’s forthcoming album Grey Tickles, Black Pressure immediately sounds fresh for the singer, with a bassline that comes across like Axel F’s Beverley Hills Cop theme that gives way to some light funk chords before Grant’s consuming baritone which reels out a large list of things – rollercoasters, trombones, french horn sections, ancient trees – all of which are disappointing compared to the object of Grant’s affections.
Verse two has Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn joining in on the listicle lyrics as the synthesizer-shake and doo wop backing vocals grow amidst the song. It’s a typically idiosyncratic lyrical and sonic mix from Grant.
Grey Tickles, Black Pressure will be released 2nd October on Bella Union.
Grant plays two dates in Vicar Street on November 9th and 10th.
