James Smith aka J Smith is an artist who has drawn deep from his personal life.
For his first single since 2022’s Three Dots EP, the former Gypsies On The Autobahn artist draws on his unique family living situation, that comes from the decision to raise his child with his wife living alongside his two friends and their three children on one plot of farmland in the countryside, known among friends as the ‘Baby Farm’.
It’s from the upcoming Baby Farm EP on October 18th which features Faye O’Rourke (Soda Blonde), Karen Cowley (Krea/Wyvern Lingo), Melina Malone, Antoinnette Dunleavy and Gareth Quinn Redmond.
The EP speaks of quiet moments with his wife and child, as well as his tumultuous experience of becoming a father in a hospital during COVID. The EP’s release will be accompanied by J Smith’s podcast series where he speaks with other fathers about their experience of life at home with their own family and their experiences of birth.
James is from a talented music family that includes Kevin Smith (Kojaque), Daniel Smith (Daniel Luke) and Liam Smith (Audible Chocolate / Scustin)
J Smith plays the Cobblestone on the 20th of October with friends Dylan Lynch (Soda Blonde / Moondiver) and Aidan Gray (Big Sleep) to celebrate the release of Baby Farm EP.
J Smith – Baby Farm Lyrics
Life on the farm couldn’t be described
You’d have to see it with your own eyes
Baby’s up the wall and the food to tend
Don’t let it burn, or you won’t hear the end
I’d love to wake at a reasonable time
Without a child bouncing on my mind
I meant my head, but it’s somewhere else
Wipe down a kid and excuse the mess
We joked about all the chaos, and I know
We’ll choke up leaving the chaos
Life on the farm couldn’t be described
You’ll have to go there before you die
Can’t say it’s on many bucket lists
But sure as hell you can bring the kids
We’re moving on to greener fields
Where she can graze and live out her years
God knows what we’re leaving behind
3 sisters and the time of our life
We joked about all the chaos, and I know
We’ll choke up leaving the chaos
I’ll hear your stories from your dad
Hear how you grow in the years ahead
I’ll see you smiling through a phone
But not the crying any more
I’ll miss the garden in the spring
And how I’d find you pottering
I’ll keep in touch while the memories fresh
If life moves on, I won’t ever forget
We joked about all the chaos, and I know
We’ll choke up leaving the chaos, and I know
Our Kids grew up in the chaos, and I know
We’ll choke up leaving the chaos
Hey, before you go...
