New albums out today: Cate Le Bon, Mitski, Animal Collective, Black Country, New Road & more
Friday is album release day and here’s a rundown of what’s been released on DSPs and physical releases in record shops.
Cate Le Bon – Pompeii
Welsh alt-avant-pop artist releases sixth album on Mexican Summer. A psychedelic hazy pop smudge with bass and synth at the fore. She plays the National Concert Hall on March 19.
Mitski – Laurel Hell
Critical indie darling releases her sixth studio album after a four year hiatus. Plays Dublin’s Vicar Street on April 25th 2022.
Animal Collective – Time Skiffs
11th album from Baltimore psych merchants. Also playing Dublin and Limerick.
Black Country, New Road – Ants from Up There
The announcement that frontman Isaac Woods is leaving the band for mental health reasons will give a listen to this second album in two years from the post- jazz-rock indie band on Ninja Tune a different slant.
Los Bitchos – Let The Festivities Begin!
The London-based, pan-continental female four-piece make instrumental music. “or through friends. Their unique sound binds them together, taking in a retro-futuristic blend of Peruvian chicha, Argentine cumbia, Turkish psych and surf guitars.” I’d say it’d be fun live. Out on City Slang.
Saba – Few Good Things
Pivot Gang collective and Chicago rapper/producer releases his third album.
Whozyerman? – Blink
Paul Savage formerly of O Emperor releases a solo album. It’s Bandcamp Friday.
Anthony Naples – Chameleon
Naples new album leans on live instrumentation and has blissed-out ambient jam feels.
MotherMary – I Am A God
Synthwave and art pop twin sister duo on Italians Do It Better.
Teno Afrika – Where You Are
Debut album from 22-year-old Soweto-based Amapiano producer and DJ.
Laurie Shaw – The Great Southern
“Recorded over the course of 2021, the album features eleven new songs centred around the old Great Southern Hotel that used to be in Kenmare, County Kerry (now known as the Park Hotel). The narratives throughout the album take place in Kenmare over several time periods with a loose story of a secret agent in 1955 interwoven throughout.” Bandcamp.
Henry Earnest – Dream River
New seven-track album by the Soft Boy records associate.
The Divine Comedy – Charmed Life: The best of The Divine Comedy
If it doesn’t have My lovely Horse in it, can it really be a best of?
Marissa Nadler – The Wrath of the Clouds EP
A new five song EP from Marissa Nadler featuring two covers and three previously unreleased tracks written during the same period as her critically lauded album from 2021, The Path of the Clouds.
