Premiere: BARQ debut new disco-soul sound in ‘I’m Blaming You’

Ruth Cronin

BARQ are a high octane four-piece based in Dublin that are self-described as “agrosoul”.

They have become known for their consistently high-energy live shows which they have brought to Canadian Music Week and MONDO in New York as well as festivals over the UK and Ireland since their inception two years ago. There is often a political undercurrent to their music: their last single ‘Sassy Mouth‘ was inspired by the Repeal The Eighth campaign.

Their new single ‘I’m Blaming You‘ veers more towards soul than ever before with lead singer Jess Kavanagh’s voice taking to the forefront in a gorgeous lead hook in the chorus. Her vocal is strong enough to withstand and rival the busy synth lines and unrelenting bass lines.

Produced by rising production house Diffusion Lab, the track is reminiscent of Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, and The Internet yet is unmistakably BARQ in its presentation and personality.

The band said that:

‘I’m Blaming You’ is an exploration of our most uncomfortable inner voices. The ones that blame others for our failings instead of taking stock of our own behaviour. A commentary on societal pressures to be successful, accepting, and gracious at all times.”

BARQ play The Button Factory this November 21st and tickets are available here.
