The National surprise release new album Laugh Track ahead of Dublin gig this week

Avatar

The National announced that a surprise new album over the weekend at their Homecoming Festival in Cincinnati, ahead of their 3Arena date this week.

Laugh Track is a new 12-track album, and companion to First Two Pages of Frankenstein, culled from the same sessions as that album.

The National kick off their EU / UK tour this Thursday in Dublin’s 3Arena.

Laugh Track is described as The National’s most freewheeling, all-hands-on-deck album in years. Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers and Rosanne Cash all feature on the album. The Bon Iver collaboration ‘Weird Goodbyes’, was released as a standalone track in August 2022.

“Revelling in the license to radically upend its creative process, The National honed most of this material in live performances on tour this year, and captured those invigorated versions in impromptu sessions at producer Tucker Martine’s Portland studio, Flora Recording & Playback. The nearly eight-minute album closer ‘Smoke Detector’ was recorded in June during a Vancouver soundcheck.”

The album embraces Bryan Devendorf as a rock drummer.

“We developed a fairly elaborate way of building songs in which [drummer] Bryan [Devendorf] had a very important but compartmentalized role. This time we had the desire to make something that was more alive so that Bryan’s playing would drive more.”
