Fontaines DC – In The Modern World

An epic tune from an epic album (Romance), this is my favourite song of 2024. I love how Grian has used his voice on this track, the soaring strings are stunning and the harmonies remind me of ‘God Only Knows’ by The Beach Boys. I often put it on my headphones, walk by the sea where I live, and take in my natural surroundings.

Baby Rose & BADBADNOTGOOD – One Last Dance

The first time I heard this track, I must have listened to it about twenty times in one day. Baby Rose’s sultry, soulful vocals are a perfect compliment to the instrumentation which  recalls many wonderful Muscle Shoals songs from the 1960s.

Ezra Collective feat. Yazmin  Lacey – God Gave Me Feet for Dancing

An addictive, upbeat track, that I can’t get enough of.  Put this on your stereo and you’ll be instantly filled with happiness. I love how it describes the joy of dancing, something many of us cannot live without.

Pet Shop Boys – A New Bohemia

When I hear this song, I’m immediately transported back to the romantic days of Classical Hollywood, it’s a dreamy ballad which yearns for the heady days of youth. I think it’s one of the best songs The Pet Shop Boys have ever written.

A Lazarus Soul – The Dealers

I don’t even know where to begin with this song, but to say that it’s a knockout. Everytime I listen to it, I weep. It tells the story of Tessie and Bridie, two street dealers who work all hours of the day to make ends meet, while simultaneously holding their families together. Brian Brannigan’s lyrics are outstanding, I feel that A Lazarus Soul’s music should be study at Leaving Cert. When I was a kid, I often went to Moore Street with my friends (we bought our first Doc Martens there), I saw how hard those women worked, yet they were always in good spirits. Brian has captured them perfectly.

St. Vincent – Violent Times

Who knew that in all the brilliant music she has produced, St. Vincent would then go and write a song that sounds like a Bond Theme? There’s nothing she can’t do. Not only is she one of the best guitarists in the world, but her vocals are beautiful and I think you can really hear that on this track.

Jalen Ngonda – Anyone In Love

Jalen Ngonda is one of my favourite artists of the moment. For me he’s up there with Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. I love the sweet, soulful innocence of this song. I saw him at Electric Picnic, his voice is genuinely one of the best I’ve ever heard, effortless, like a bird.

Michael Kiwanuka – The Rest of Me

SLOUCHO’s debut album NPC weaves a narrative throughout. ‘Super Maramu 2000’ is a highlight for me, with Latin-inspired drum patterns and vocal quips that speak directly to the listener. He has been hinting that more music is to be released soon, and I am looking forward to hearing more from the world of SLOUCHO.

Jamie XX and The Avalances – All You Children

When Jamie XX and The Avalanches come together, it’s bound to be something special;  this is a banger. The song celebrates coming together, dancing and forgetting your troubles. The spoken word by Nikki Giovanni (from Dance Poem) is magical.

Alan Dixon – Nothing But Happiness

I think I played this at all my sets throughout the summer, it always gets a great response. It’s a euphoric, soulful house track that you instantly move to. I think Alan Dixon is an exceptional producer as he traverses genres, producing everything from techno, to house music to electronica.
