Despite what a short-sighted article in the Sunday Times over the weekend would have you believe, Twitter is much more than “a vanity project” for bloggers like myself. It’s where I (and many others) share and get links, recommendations, news and short bits that aren’t worth a full blog post. It’s where people make connections, share knowledge and all that good stuff that makes life a little bit better.
Sure, you could lazily focus on the mundane tweets that everyone emits, but that’s like thinking all music is moribund because you only listen to Spin FM or that all TV is trash because you only watch Big Brother. Graham Linehan addressed the newspaper Twitter syndrome last week.
In light of this, I thought it was worthwhile collating some of the more interesting tweets over the past week on the blog for those who don’t use Twitter and those missed it the first time. Of course, if you want more of this from me, you can follow me on Twitter. Just don’t do it boost my ego 😉

but…but… i want to know what a music blogger has for breakfast. YOU’VE TTLY MISSED THE POINT.
Good call Nialler, it’s useful to post a collection of tweets as a round-up each week if there’s something we missed or forgot to check out.
Even though it’s a great way of collecting info and sharing stuff, I think you hit the nail on the head yesterday when you said “what about the community?” in defence. That is such an underrated aspect of Twitter, one I didn’t really understand until I got involved. It’s not only a way to keep track of your friends’ interests but also your interests’ interests! Hah!

I read the piece Niall, and did a double take when I saw them singling out that tweet from you. It was hardly representative…and you strike a really good balance between personal tweets and information tweets. The odd little personal detail makes twitter what it is. Next time you’re enjoying a guinness in the cobblestone i hope you still tweet about it. Sure if I was just around the corner, I’d knock in and join you.
That journalist could have written a mirror image story focusing on Irish who use the application positively, or at least balanced it out a bit better. But sure what would be the point of that, for someone working for a paper about to charge people for online content?
Would you be able to post this video of my girl jessie? It’s getting mad hype from my twitter (twitter.com/louisehaynes) and it’d be fierce if it was on one of my fav music blogs.

good one nialler.
perfect responce to that article which was most definitely in stark contrast to Linehan’s arguments pro-twitter.
thanks for the link also, that weekend in ldn really did bring it home for me as i grow my network through our twitter conversations, which yes, sometimes, hit upon pints and whatnot but moreso bring us all together with a common love of music and community.
cheers

That article was such a farce, theres nothing more annoying and pathetic than a narrow minded begrudger on a rant about something which they so obviously haven’t a clue.
Keep the roundups coming Nialler!
well i have defended twitter since the start (as Senorita Nay will tell you 🙂 ) and i reckon the amount of recent newspaper articles slating it as a pointless exercise in narcissism and ego-tripping have been written by those who are just not into it at all…and will never be.yeah yeah it’s full of bilge and sycophancy and that sort of gimpage but it also provides a slew of interesting links, clips, vids and a little snapshot of humanity on a gloomy monday morn.if you don’t like someone’s tweets, just block ’em.simple as.the guinness in the cobblestone is cracking too.if you had said the capitol then it would have been a worthless tweet.do i have to link a tweet to something cool to get on this bleedin’ list?me lord of the rings clip is propah good 😉
i wonder what mr. sunday times would have to say about the fact that hundreds of people got to cycle with lance artmstrong yesterday in the phoenix park on the back of a tweet he sent out in the AM.
🙂
Is there a link to the article, I looked for it but didn’t find it? Reading the other comments I’m reallu curious to know what points were made.
Not online as far as I can tell. it was pretty myopic though.
