One of my favourite new artists of the last year, Daughter, Elena Tonra and her band will play Button Factory on Saturday 26th of January.
Over two EPs and her recent ‘Smother’ single as well as a great Daytrotter session and a Eurosonic performance, Elena has shown that she can write slow-burning connecting folk imbued by love and loss in an uplifting and magnetic way. I’m a fan. An album is coming on 4AD next year. Tickets €15 plus fees on sale from Ticketmaster and usual outlets next Monday. Here’s a video of her on Letterman I hadn’t seen.

Niall Byrne is the founder of the most-influential Irish music site Nialler9, where he has been writing about music since 2005 . He is the co-host of the Nialler9 Podcast and has written for the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Cara Magazine, Sunday Times, Totally Dublin, Red Bull and more. Niall is a DJ, founder of Lumo Club, club promoter, event curator and producer of gigs, listening parties & events in Dublin.
Don’t think she does all the work on these Nialler. The story I heard is her songwriting was in the doldrums until she met her partner ( in the band) who gave them the dimension they needed. Great nonetheless.
When she first appeared, there was no mention of anyone else so the story was very much put out there as Elena and then she got a band involved. I can only speak to that, I don’t know the intimate details of it. Regardless, super tunes like you said.
