Handpicked new tunes: Anderson .Paak + Bruno Mars, Drake, For Those I Love, Kelly Lee Owens & more

Friday is release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.

See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks we deemed worthy enough of their own article this week.

Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars – ‘Leave The Door Open’

The Silk Sonic duo have left the door open and breezing out is a retro funk soul tune sweating with lusty energy, from their TBA date album An Evening With Silk Sonic.

Bicep – ‘X’ (feat. Clara La San)

A reminder of Bicep’s new album Isles and last week’s excellent live stream, which is getting a repeat on-demand window to watch if you missed it between March 12th and 14th.

Drake – ‘What’s Next’

Drake dropped a three-tracker for Bandcamp Fri… Nah.

For Those I Love – ‘Birthday / The Pain’ (Finn Remix)

A remix of the recent single from For Those I Love takes it in a brighter direction but David Balfe’s realist message cuts through. The Manchester producer’s take sounds like an epilogue version of the song.

Mount Alaska – ‘Terrain’

A new track from Stephen Shannon and Cillian McDonnell’s evocative ambient electronic project.

No Rome feat. Charli XCX & The 1975 – ‘Spinning’

In case you were wondering what The 1975 would sound like if they went full pop banger.

Kelly Lee Owens – ‘My Own’

A Bandcamp Friday bonus track from the Inner Song sessions from the Welsh producer.

Tanoki – ‘Loading’ (Feat Farah Elle)

Kilkenny musician and videographer Paul Mahon (Geppetto) kickstarts his new project Tanoki by enlisting one of the country’s finest voices on ‘Loading’, a fine slice of bright-toned jazz-tronica.

“The song is a commentary on what we’re doing with technology and how it’s intersecting with our lives. As we lose what makes us human in exchange for the robotic, I want listeners to imagine the kind of lyrics that might come from an android, the cyborgs we’re becoming.”

Elliott Mo – ‘Motion’

Irish producer Elliott Mo continues to impress with his sheenful electronic instrumentals with hook-providing voice samples.

Real Lies – ‘Oh Me, Oh My’ (Unreal mix)

Another fine version of a tune from Real Lies, who have been knocking them out lately.

Emotional Oranges – ‘Body & Soul’ (feat. Biig Piig)

A Biig Piig-featuring collaboration with the LA R&B group with the questionable name.

upsammy – ‘Bend’

Dutch producer upsammy follows up last year’s excellent album Zoom with a new four-track EP lead by this lovely self-describing track ‘Flutter’.

Tolü Makay – ‘Used To Be’

After receiving huge recognition for her ‘N17’ cover, Tolü returns to soaring ballad territory with her new single produced with Enda Gallery.
